Pierre Giraudon (1923-2012) was both a biologist and an artist, although he resisted the latter label in favor of the former. After studying botany and biology at the Sorbonne, the Frenchman developed his signature technique of resin inclusion casting: running an electrical current through the curing resin allowed him to fracture the material and suspend elements within it, all while maintaining a smooth, solid form, such as this large sphere. Made by Giraudon in the 1970s, it reflects and refracts light, brightening any room.
