An ancient gemstone takes the form of a lidded box for jewelry or other special item. With a name derived from the Latin word for stone (lapis) and the Persian word for blue (lazhuward), lapis lazuli has been mined—and highly sought after—for thousands of years. Adding dimension to the rich, celestial blue are golden flecks of pyrite and veins of white calcite.
