Stylist sisters Maryam and Marjan Malakpour launched NewbarK to make chic yet comfortable shoes that they could wear “at home, on set, and when traveling.” Their 2009 debut collection consisted of a single style: black flats with a split sole that folded into a small carrying pouch. “The look is a mélange of Moroccan babouche meets Englishman’s leather slippers—a stylish alternative to ballet flats,” say the Malakpours, whose streamlined aesthetic is distinguished by material contrasts: think leather, canvas, felt, suede, and virtually no hardware. It’s a simple, modern look that the brand has recently extended to handbags, made in the same artisan factory in downtown Los Angeles as their sophisticated shoes.
