The first photographer to be elected to the Académie des Beaux Arts in Paris, Lucien Clergue gained early supporters in his prominent and photogenic friends such as Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso. He went on the establish himself as one of the most idiosyncratic and influential French photographers, combining a subtle artistic sensibility with the heat and sensuality of his native Provence.
