At the age of 16, Frankfurt-born Lilo Raymond (1922–2009) fled the Nazi regime for Manhattan, where she became part of the Greenwich Village art scene. Studying with legendary photographer and fine art printer David Vestal at the New York Photo League shaped her pared-down style, characterized by simple subjects bathed in rich, natural light. Her photos focus on the ordinary but are infused with metaphor and rooted in the history of art.
