The Body Never Lies:
Photographs by Cartier-Bresson, Mapplethorpe, and More
Modern dancer and choreographer Martha Graham described the body as “a sacred garment” to be treated with honor, joy, and fear. She believed that the human form had a wordless language all its own: “The body never lies,” Graham was fond of saying. This statement has guided our selection of new artworks, which features two Barbara Morgan portraits of Graham in glorious action. Offered as part of our collaboration with Feldschuh Gallery, the photographs span more than eight decades, including works by Martin Munkácsi, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Robert Mapplethorpe, Joel-Peter Witkin, and Annie Leibovitz.
