Soft Power:
Protagonist’s Fluid and Feminine Spring Collection

Photographed by Charlotte Wales

Over the past five seasons, New York-based Protagonist has honed the ability to elevate the modern wardrobe through a studio-based design process that reimagines classic styles, giving them new relevance and character. The new collection builds upon that balance of distinction and restraint with an emphasis on fluid, feminine shapes. The softer side of Protagonist is revealed in exquisitely constructed dresses, pajama-inspired pieces, and artfully wrapped styles united by an unadorned ease that is seasonless yet especially fit for spring.

Protagonist pieces elevate rather than conceal the process of their making. A cream-colored dress achieves its elegantly draped silhouette through textured crepe that adds depth and dimension. The dramatic v-shaped neckline is anchored by a knotted front detail, with a keyhole that dips below the gently gathered, bandeau-style bodice. Smoother lines frame the low back, which can reveal an expanse of skin or the smooth jersey of a bodysuit.

Selected with an eye to softened silhouettes designed for daily wear, materials range from silky twills and full-bodied charmeuse to lightweight suede and textured crepe.

A luxuriously oversized black trench balances serene femininity with menswear-inspired tailoring and finishes, enveloping the body in substantial yet beautifully draping viscose twill. With broad, notched lapels, an exaggerated storm flap at back, and elegantly extended sleeves, the drop-shoulder silhouette is designed to be cinched at the waist by its self belt.

The collection’s sole print, stripes infuse the largely neutral palette with precision while accenting the prevailing ease. The crisp white button-up that has become a Protagonist signature gets a feminine twist in a tunic with an attached front tie. Pinstriped cotton shirting puts the focus on considered details such as a clean-lined mandarin collar and bracelet sleeves that culminate in extended three-button cuffs.
