Healthful Resolutions from Daphne Javitch of Doing Well

RESOLUTIONS cover

The new year gets off with a bang, a recurrently provisional bang with lofty ideas and stopgap solutions to health. To avoid the ill-fated fatigue of February 1st, strive for balance and gradual efforts instead. When it comes to health, start small with incremental change and consistent action. So says holistic nutritionist Daphne Javitch, whose project, Doing Well, offers integrative lifestyle coaching and a daily digest of bite-size advice both approachable and attainable. “You don’t have to start a whole new life to be healthy,” says Javitch. “Small adjustments done consistently will have healthful results. Choose a healthy practice and do it everyday.” Here, she shares five salubrious resolutions to get started.

Sleep

“You can try every cleanse, diet, and reboot on earth, but if you’re not sleeping 7 to 9 hours per night, you’re missing the most powerful detox of all. Sleep is crucial for cellular regeneration. Sleep cleans the brain. When we’re under slept we are more likely to make reactive choices all day long. Well-rested humans are more mindful, intentional, and aware.”

Plant Foods

“Raw fruits, veggies, and leaves contain the enzymatic spark that sweeps and pulls dense matter (cooked foods) through the body. Plants contain cancer-fighting phytonutrients and are rich in fiber. Fiber, a PRE-biotic, serves your gut bacteria well, so start by filling 75% of your plate with plant foods to benefit from these gainful foods daily.”

Movement

“Exercise. Someone has to do it and that someone is everyone. The benefits of exercise diminish within weeks after a person stops, so be honest about what you do, and do it consistently. A little exercise five days a week is more effective than a lot on January 2nd. Gentle, focused exercises can be as effective as hard exertion without altering your cortisol levels (stress hormones). If you’re short on time, or not ready to go public, try free movement at home instead. Start with a 20 to 30 minute list of lively songs to get you moving.”

Hydration

“If you’re experiencing any of the following you may be dehydrated: thirst, dry mouth, dry nose, dull skin, fatigue, irritability, headaches, hunger between meals, or heavy eye circles. Think of drinking water as your internal shower. Aside from promoting detox, staying hydrated aids digestion, improves circulation, relieves constipation, reduces inflammation, and makes you glow. Drink it, lots of it, and aim for 2 to 3 liters per day.”

Fresh Air

“Nothing soothes and strengthens the soul like getting out in nature. Whether it’s an ocean or lake swim, a hike, or afternoon in the park, nature heals, humbles, and stimulates. Being outdoors eases anxiety, stress, and depression—naturally. Get near oxygen as often as possible and breathe deeply. A weekly outing or getaway is most advantageous, but the addition of a few carefully placed houseplants is a good start.”
