Dermal Devotion:
Refresh, Repair, and Protect with NYDG

At Fifth Avenue and 19th Street, on the second floor of a historic building that once housed the original Lord & Taylor flagship, sits a 7,000-square-foot office of lambent white pods which, at first glance, could be mistaken for a Ridley Scott film set. But here, inside the New York Dermatology Group Integral Health & Wellness Clinic, the futuristic vibe has nothing to do with extraterrestrials, and everything to do with otherworldly skin for mere mortals. (Those space-age-looking pods are actually state-of-the-art treatment rooms.) On the seemingly endless services-and-procedures menu? Seven different laser options (including Fraxel, Vbeam Perfecta, CO2RE, and Excel-V), blue-light therapy for stubborn acne, CoolSculpting for surgery-free fat reduction, a full-body collagen bed, and the mostly deftly injected fillers in town, to list just a few of the mix-and-match options.

The founder of the New York Dermatology Group (NYDG), board-certified dermatologist and internist Dr. David Colbert, knows, however, that angelic skin starts from the inside out: his group includes not only other dermatologists and internists, but also an orthopedic surgeon, a gynecologist, an acupuncturist, a nutritionist, and various aestheticians, who share space on the clinic’s treatment menu. “We opened the wellness clinic because it’s a natural extension of our philosophy on skincare and looking one’s best,” explains Dr. Colbert. “It’s no longer just about the face, but our total well-being. As an internist and dermatologist, I’m acutely aware of how skin is a direct reflection of our inner workings.”

As it happens, the wellness clinic’s privacy-focused space, ahead-of-the-curve technologies, and traditional-meets-holistic approach have made it a skin-saving haven for the Who’s Who of intelligent Hollywood, from Naomi Watts and Chloë Sevigny to Caitriona Balfe and Kyle MacLachlan. (A favorite menu option for celebs is Dr. Colbert’s trademarked Triad Facial®, a three-step skin renewal of microdermabrasion, laser toning, and chemical peeling.) In preparation for The Line’s photo shoot of the clinic, seen here, Dr. Colbert didn’t hesitate in calling upon actress Gretchen Mol, his longtime friend and patient, to participate. “Gretchen is truly a warm and compassionate person—someone who radiates light,” he enthuses. “I wanted someone who could deliver a Vermeer-like quality of skin, and she has it.”

NYDG Skincare Colloidal Oatmeal Cleanser, NYDG Skincare Ultra-light Hydra-gel, NYDG Skincare Chem-free Active Defense, NYDG Skincare Formula 119 Cream, NYDG Skincare Luminizing Skin Essence

A good many of the clinic’s patients (including some of the recognizable names above) rely on its NYDG Skincare line to keep their faces balanced, protected, and, well, as Vermeerish as potions will allow. Recently launched outside the clinic and now available at The Line, the comprehensive six-product range caters to women and men with active lifestyles who face a daily onslaught of environmental aggressors (UV light, pollution, and suchlike). “Our new line—the second I've helped develop—was conceived as part and parcel of the NYDG Integral Health & Wellness Clinic,” says Dr. Colbert, who created the formulas in collaboration with his team of dermatologists, internists, aestheticians, and chemists. “I wanted products that would complement all our new in-office skincare treatments.” Those who aren’t patients of NYDG, though, will rejoice in the fact that the sensitive-skin line is packed with antioxidants and anti-irritants and free of mineral oil, parabens, sulfates, and chemical sunscreens..

The first step of the NYDG Skincare regimen is the Colloidal Oatmeal Cleanser, a makeup- and oil-removing multitasker that soothes with aloe vera, chamomile, and colloidal oatmeal (the last of which is rarely found in cleansers); gently exfoliates with bromelain; and protects with Vitamin E and green tea. Cleansing is followed by a layer of Luminizing Skin Essence, a brightening cocktail of hyaluronic acid, balancing probiotics, jojoba oil, and willowherb and rose extracts. “This creates an ideal canvas for moisturizer and sunscreen,” says Dr. Colbert, “and makes your skin feel as though it’s wrapped in silk all day long.”

It’s no longer just about the face, but our total well-being. As an internist and dermatologist, I’m acutely aware of how skin is a direct reflection of our inner workings.Dr. Colbert

For intense moisture, NYDG Skincare converts can reach for the Ultra-Light Hydra-Gel, a matte-finish formula that quenches with hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate, and sodium PCA, or the richer Formula 119 Cream, a skin-nourishing powerhouse with rejuvenating shea butter, collagen-stimulating peptides, and free-radical-shielding green tea and gingko leaf. “Applying the cream is a full-on sensory experience, partly due to the lavender inside,” says Dr. Colbert. “Close your eyes and you’ll find yourself in Provence.” What’s more, both the gel and the cream, despite their different textures, are suitable for all skin types, and there’s a supplementary Re-Contour Eye Gel for those inevitable puffy mornings (licorice root and mulberry extract do the trick).

The last step (unarguably the most important one) is sun protection, and NYDG Skincare offers something of a breakthrough in this area: a potent mineral sunscreen that doesn’t apply like a mask of Venetian ceruse. Formulated with 17.5 percent micronized zinc oxide, the Chem-Free Active Defense SPF30, unlike its peers, sits near-invisibly on the skin and offers regenerative benefits beneath its mineral veil. “I’d always wanted to develop a unique sunblock that could be a makeup primer or, if desired, an elegant daily moisturizer,” says Dr. Colbert. “The mix of squalane and micronized zinc oxide in the Chem-Free Active Defense is unique in that it not only protects from the sun, but also tips the skin’s equilibrium in favor of collagen production.” It is, perhaps, the one age-defying product that would best prepare skincare-obsessives for their first consultation with Dr. Colbert himself. “To me, every patient is a celebrity,” he says with a smile. “I love that what I do requires a combination of science and restraint. Every face that walks into my office is a new artwork.”
