Skin Deep:
Clear Conscious Skincare from Circumference

Skagerak bathtub

by Alexa Hotz

Skin. An essential container. Our largest organ. A breathable fabric absorbing and protecting, regenerating and preserving. There’s more to the skin than the superficial layer we most often see. There’s a whole big world out there chock full of pollutants, harmful UV rays, free radicals, and a forbidding host of unseen chemicals that directly affect our endocrinology and mental health. These components of modern life have a literal affect on the way we think and our most base perceptions. Through the study of endocrinology—thyroid and adrenal—we now know that what we take in through the skin (chemicals, toxins, neurological disruptors) can influence and modify the body’s internal systems. Fortunately for us all, the skin regenerates every 27 days. With a routine of purified skincare—formulations steeped in efficacious botanicals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids—we begin to reassemble a clean body and clear conscious. From Circumference, a line of skincare dedicated to purity and quality (“every drop of dishonesty, waste, and glitter removed”), serums, oils, toners, and creams are pressed into Rorschach blots and take us deeper.

It was Swiss psychologist Hermann Rorshach who, in the 1920s, first implemented the system of inkblots to assess personality and emotional functioning. It’s said that the 10 blots chosen for their diagnostic value offers information on an individual’s core motivations, response tendencies, cognitive operations, and personal perceptions. Our first test is designed with drops of the Circumference Face Oil—the 16 different organic ingredients proportioned to protect and repair the skin. Let’s take a look at one of those 16, Sacha Inchi Seed Oil, or Inca peanut, containing all 8 essential amino acids that the skin cannot create on its own in addition to Vitamin A and E, Omega-3, and Omega-6. What gives the oil its yellowish hue? That’s Sea Buckthorn with its Omega-7 fatty acids (“rare among plant-based oils” says Circumference) to reduce inflammation and promote the healing of damaged skin.

Our goal was simple: to create a line of skincare products to indulge in fully and fearlessly—with uncomplicated, potent, pleasure-filled essentials, unadulterated by the impurities and distractions that fill our minds and space around us.Circumference

To aid the skin in its 27-day regeneration, neutralizing exposure to damaging pollution and free radicals is key. A wash and soaking up of the Circumference Day Serum protects the cutaneous upper layer. That dose of consistent hydration comes in the form of hyaluronic acid, olive leaf extract (a free radical resistor), and a stable form of Vitamin C (for elasticity, collagen, brightening, and repair). “Circumference can be used with a clear conscious,” they say. “Indulging in our beauty routines isn’t about indulging in frivolousness, but rather, embracing the lifelong journey that is skincare.”

Active is the key word here, in the Active Botanical Refining Toner. It’s the first wash of product the skin receives in the morning. Jelly-like aloe leaf juice dives deep into the skin dermis to deliver Vitamin B and C, folic acid, carotene, and the exact type of minerals and amino acids that the skin can easily absorb and process. Here, a design in near perfect bilateral symmetry prompts the mind. It’s Rorschach’s easiest blot for a clear response; most say it’s a bat, butterfly, or moth, but any response—so long as it’s clear and precise—will do.

The concept of a mask is a concentrated remedy, delivered in a heavy layer and for a focused amount of time. French green clay absorbs toxins out of the skin. Two of the many botanicals at work here are Blackcurrent Seed Oil—rich in Gamma Linolenic Acid and Alpha-Linolenic Acid to boost circulation and decrease inflammation—and Evening Primrose Oil—to improve complexion, dryness, irritation, and boost moisture retention. The In-Depth Hydration Mask (in white, seen here) delivers intense moisture in 20 minutes flat. With Circumference skincare you can bet the botanicals are all your getting: “skin nourishing, nutrient-rich natural ingredients sourced sustainability from their own native regions, are all intelligently formulated to help protect your skin from the outside elements and to built and maintain healthy skin,” they say. “No waste, no toxins, no harm, no guilt—just pure, healthy, effective skincare.”
