In the late ‘70s, when Richard Avedon set up his now-iconic bare-bones backdrop against the wider expanse of Texas for his “In the American West” series, he pioneered a mode of portraiture that would have an undeniable influence on fashion photography. Avedon was making pictures of cowboys and ranchers and drifters, but his approach translates seamlessly to the cool new models that noted casting director Ben Grimes invited to step in front of our minimal backdrop and try on versions of their future selves. “So many girls are actually aiming to do something other than modeling,” Grimes notes. “It gives an extra facet to them. I think it’s important to humanize models.” Call them superlative models—here, meet eight fresh faces to watch now, in eight equally distinct and equally fresh looks for spring.

THE FIERCE AND FEMININE
Maeva Nikita Giani, Heroes

Living in Paris by way of Miami means Maeva Nikita Giani embodies both a sense of acquired French chic and an American spirit of adventure. Backstage at shows, don’t expect to find her buried in a book but rather calling her grandmother to show her the true behind-the-scenes experience. Here she tries on KHAITE’s irresistible denim jacket.
THE MEGA STRUT
Akiima, IMG
Akiima is the rare girl who, when her height inevitably begs the questions “Are you a model? Do you play basketball?”, can truthfully answer that she is both. Her team position is forward, which seems to express her bold, spirited style and future ambitions: the Australian-Sudanese model plans to one day become a teaching nurse. Here she slips on a strong drape dress by Jacquemus.
THE ALL AMERICAN
Grace Vinson, DNA
Hailing from Fort Myers, Florida, Grace Vinson is one of the freshest faces on the scene and softens Rosetta Getty’s sprightly, bold-striped sweater with her wide-eyed gaze.

THE MODERN BOMBSHELL
Mia Speicher, Next

In front of the camera, there’s something cinematic about Mia Speicher, whose features organically echo iconic Hollywood glamour. Off duty, however, she pursues a whole-hearted approach to life, backpacking in the mountains and putting in regular volunteer work with a suicide prevention program. Here she slips into a look that connotes easy sophistication, CASASOLA’s luxurious take on a classic tank ,worn with KHAITE’s cropped black flare.
THE RENAISSANCE GIRL
Runa Neuwirth, DNA
It’s impossible to pin down Runa Neuwirth, whose tastes swing from her predilection for slam poetry and taking in contemporary dance performances and, when she’s being truly serious, her studies in mathematics and art. Call her the New Renaissance Girl: Here she steps into a look that’s fit for anything: from Raf Simons’ CALVIN KLEIN 205W39NYC collection, a perfect silk rib-knit turtleneck in a sunny hue with brilliant appeal.
THE CONSCIOUS SPIRIT
Kiko Arai, Muse

The onetime Miss Japan is a rising star in her native Osaka, but off the runways she’d rather be behind the camera. Here, she tries on a structured Diane Arbus–worthy jacket by Lemaire, paired with a fresh, cropped denim pant. The budding film photographer also devotes her time to her family’s charitable foundation, which benefits Cambodian orphans.
THE CONTEMPORARY ROMANTIC
Maryel Sousa, Society

Meet the modern-day Lady of Shalott: like the classic John William Waterhouse painting of the Tennyson poem, on the runway Maryel Sousa embodies the ethereal and enigmatic. Here she translates those qualities into strong modern minimalism, in Protagonist’s bodysuit and Goldsign’s timeless faded jean.
THE FRESH DELICATE
Maryna Horda, The Lions
From Belarus, comes one Maryna Horda, whose Instagram depicts this young model walking in a slew of romantic frocks and reveals an off-duty love of nature, particularly in the form of peaceful, practically placid beaches, and deep green forests. Here, she tries on a minimalistic, urban combination of cold shoulder bodysuit and KHAITE’s high-rise jeans.
